The benefits and harms of instant coffee

The benefits and harms of instant coffee

There is a perception that instant coffee drinkers take significantly more health risks than those who adhere to the natural beverage. However, many items in the list of positive and negative characteristics of these products overlap. An objective review will show what exactly are the benefits and harms of instant coffee for the human body.

What are the benefits of a quick drink

The granules of instant coffee contain some important vitamins and trace elements. Associated with this are its main benefits. Their share is small, but still these substances get into the body with every cup:

  1. Vitamin PP. Dilates brain vessels, feeding them with oxygen. The result – improved mood, tone, increased efficiency.
  2. Vitamin B2. Together with PP helps to break down and useful to distribute fats and carbohydrates in the body.
  3. Phosphorus + calcium. Saturate bone tissue, increasing their density.
  4. Iron. Increases the content of hemoglobin in the blood.
  5. Sodium. Stimulates intercellular metabolism and cell nutrition.

A strong argument in favor of pellets is the low caffeine content compared to ground beans. Its proportion is reduced as a result of processing. This is not proof that instant coffee is healthy, but it is a strong argument in competition with natural coffee.

Researchers have found a link between moderate consumption of instant coffee and such positive factors as: improving metabolism, overcoming depression, reducing the risk of diabetes, liver disease, and preventing neurodegenerative diseases.

Harmful effects

Still, the main version says that instant coffee is harmful to health. This product is the main “supplier” of acrylamide (a carcinogenic neurotoxin), which is harmful to human health. The instant drink negatively affects important organ systems:

  1. The nervous system suffers because of its strong tonic effects. Excessive consumption can cause irritability, nervousness.
  2. The heart and blood vessels are also negatively affected. The main organ of the circulatory system begins to work more intensively. With cardiovascular diseases and problems with blood pressure the drink is contraindicated.
  3. The negative effect on the gastrointestinal tract is caused by an increase in acidity. This factor can lead to gastritis, stomach ulcers and other digestive disorders.

It is categorically not recommended to drink instant coffee on an empty stomach. It is this consumption of an invigorating drink that causes problems with the gastrointestinal tract. After a meal and before taking it, at least 30 minutes should pass.

The harm of fast coffee is also associated with its ability to “flush out” useful trace elements from the body. That is, the drink supplies them and removes them at the same time. In connection with this, the instant product is blamed for the premature aging of the skin. Lack of useful substances should be compensated by taking vitamin complexes.

The main caveat: the amount of coffee you drink should be limited. The same components that have a positive effect on well-being can cause serious harm in an overdose.

What type of coffee is the most harmless?

Processed beans in finished form are on the market in three variants: sublimate, granules and powder. The raw material for each is green beans of Arabica and Robusta varieties. The difference lies in the processing technology.

It is preferable to choose an instant product made from Arabica. The caffeine content in this sort is much lower.

Freeze drying is the best method for producing pellets, but it is also the most expensive. Coffee practically does not lose its natural useful properties. The content of flavorings and other chemical additives in the sublimate is minimal. Elite brands do not contain any additives at all.

A powdered product is the result of quick, cheap processing. Coffee loses most of its health benefits as well as flavor and aroma. The manufacturer compensates for the neutrality with harmful additives.

Considering the benefits and harms of pellets, they can be placed in the middle between powdered and freeze-dried products.

The content of caffeine and the presence of excipients also varies depending on the brand. You should pay attention to this information on the package when buying.

Separately about the “3 in 1”

If you believe the packaging, these delicious mixes have almost harmless composition: cream (milk), sugar and coffee. But the deciding factor in assessing the benefits and harms of instant coffee with milk is the origin of these components.

Natural milk cannot be stored for long. 3-in-1 coffees have a vegetable creamer with a dangerous composition.

Long shelf life creamers contain such ingredients:

  • coconut oil or palm oil;
  • glucose syrup;
  • milk protein.

In addition, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and flavor enhancers are added to the cherished sachets. The use of cheap grains, and sometimes barley and chicory help reduce the cost of the product. Additives and a lot of sugar transform the taste of the blend. Brandies with cognac, chocolate or nuts are just other chemical compounds.

The benefits of instant coffee with additives is a myth, moreover, it is harmful to health.

Two tips for the coffee drinker:

  • consume no more than three cups a day;
  • give preference to a natural drink, and drink instant coffee only in “on the go” situations.
