5 ways to brew ground coffee in a cup

Not always there is a coffee machine or a turkey at hand to brew a portion of your favorite drink, and instant, though convenient to use, but not to everyone’s taste. From this situation there is a graceful and, most importantly, simple way out – pour the ground coffee directly into the cup without any brewing, pour a little cooled boiling water and enjoy.

It is surprising that this way of brewing coffee seems strange to many people, but in 18th century, when ground coffee was becoming more and more popular among Europeans, it was brewed in this way. Coffee pots, called percolators, appeared a bit later, in the early 19th century.

General rules

For a balanced and pleasant taste, you need to pay special attention to three things: the selection of bean and grind, the temperature and quality of water, and the pot in which to infuse the beverage.

Drinkware and water

The best choice is a ceramic pot with thick walls, which keeps heat for a long time. It is desirable to preheat it by simply rinsing with hot water.

Natural ground coffee can be brewed in a cup with boiling water, but it’s bad for the taste. It is better to use non-chlorinated 90-95 ° C soft water. If the kettle has just boiled, you should wait for 2 minutes, during this time the boiling water will cool down to the desired temperature. In coolers and thermopots, common in offices, the temperature is kept in the “right” range.

Dry ingredients (ground coffee, sugar) are always poured with water, not the other way around.

Choice of ground coffee

For express brewing, you need medium-ground coffee. The way too finely ground coffee beans get suspended in a cup, which is not to everyone’s taste, while coarsely ground coffee grains are better for filter brewing, while in a mug they float and spoil the impression of the beverage.

It is ideal if the beans are ground immediately before drinking, but often this is not possible. In specialty shops, you can buy the beans and ask for them to be grinded right away as needed.

In supermarkets, the product suitable for brewing in a mug is marked with a special inscription or badge on the package. Opened pack should be used in 2 weeks, pouring the contents into an airtight opaque jar.

It’s best to brew ground coffee in a mug using only Arabica, without adding Robusta. High mountain arabica mono varieties are the most advantageous in this brewing method, but espresso blends are not suitable at all.

Express Recipes

The ideal proportion is 1 g per 15-20 ml of water. In 1 teaspoon with a slide – about 6 g. Based on this, you need 10-15 grams (or 2-2.5 teaspoons) of ground coffee per 200 ml cup, depending on the strength you prefer.

This drink is common in Poland, where it is drunk straight from the grounds, which is not to everyone’s liking. If you take medium grinded beans, however, the grounds will settle to the bottom:

  • pour ground coffee at the rate of 6-7 grams per 100 ml in a heated mug, add sugar and spices (cinnamon, cardamom
  • ) to taste;

  • pour in a little liquid to make a pulp, stir the mixture intensively for a quarter of a minute;
  • pour in the remaining water;
  • insist 3-4 minutes under a saucer.

The Brazilian version perfectly reveals the flavors of coffee varieties, so the most correct way to brew ground coffee in a cup is in this way:

  • pour 9 g (1,5 teaspoons) of ground coffee into a warmed thick-walled mug and pour 100 ml of water at 90-92 ° C;
  • do not cover the container, let stand for 4 minutes. During this time, a thick layer of grounds will form on the surface, which should be removed with a spoon before use.

The cold brewing method

This type of coffee cannot be called “custard coffee” because it doesn’t need to be heated at all. This kind of drink is good in the heat, but it takes some time to prepare:

  • in a large mug, glass or even a jar, pour the ground
  • coffee at the rate of 10 grams per 100 ml;
  • pour cold clean water;
  • insist at least 12 hours in a cool place, preferably in the refrigerator.

For a cold recipe, it is better to take a light roasted Arabica mono-variety.
