Coffee is often part of the diet of people who meticulously count every calorie. After all, a natural beverage without any additives has a negligible caloric value. But a cocktail that includes cream, sugar, and other additives in addition to espresso is considered a full-fledged dessert in terms of calories. When choosing a coffee drink and supplementing it with other ingredients, you should calculate the total caloric content.



Caloric value of natural coffee

The energy value of dry roasted coffee beans is 230 to 330 kcal per 100 grams, depending on the variety. One tablespoon of ground product is taken to make an espresso, that is, about 10 grams. So, one dose contains from 23 to 33 kcal. However, the caloric content of coffee without sugar and milk is not at all as high as it seems at first glance.

Coffee beans contain fats, carbohydrates and even proteins. They only partially pass into the beverage when brewed. The finer the beans are ground, the better the extraction. A fine grind yields slightly more substances than a coarse grind. This has only a minor effect on the final caloric content.



The average serving of espresso (30 ml) is 1 kcal. Correspondingly, a double espresso has 2 kcal.

Espresso without sugar is suitable for those who want to lose weight, because it almost does not increase the daily caloric intake and at the same time speeds up the metabolism.

The flavored bean is twice as nutritious, but that means an insignificant difference of 2 kilocalories per serving for the daily diet.

With spices

Spices added to coffee, albeit in small amounts, affect the overall caloric content of the beverage. Natural ginger and nutmeg have the most calories: they increase the energy content of each cup by 2 to 3 kilocalories.



Soluble product

Even without added sugar and milk, a beverage made from pellets or freeze-dried crystals is more caloric than brewed coffee. There are practically no caffeic acids, fats, proteins and even caffeine in instant products, because they consist of only 15-20% of the original natural raw materials. The rest is stabilizers, thickeners and coloring agents. These additives make instant coffee more nutritious: on average it contains from 6 to 12 kcal per one teaspoon with a hill.

However, this figure can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, a serving of Nescafe Gold contains only 4.5 kcal, but the same amount of Tchibo Exclusive – as many as 20.

Nutritional value of instant coffee without sugar is 5-10 times higher than that of natural products.

With sugar

In 1 teaspoon of sugar without sugar (about 5 grams) – 15 kilocalories. The same amount is in one cube of refined sugar. Adding two servings of sweetness significantly increases the caloric value of a coffee cup: from 1-4 kilocalories to 30-34.

Sweet flavored syrups, which are sometimes used instead of granulated sugar, are no less nutritious. In 10 grams (the same 2 teaspoons) – from 30 to 40 kcal.

With milk and cream

The caloric value of dairy products depends on the fat content. The most dietary option is skim milk (0.1% fat). In 100 grams there are only 30 kcal, and in a serving (20 ml) – 6. The most popular product with a fat content of 3.5%. It is twice as nutritious – 60 kcal per 100 grams, or 12 – per serving. And fat 6% milk is 85 kcal per 100 grams, or 17 per serving.



The caloric value of coffee with milk without sugar can be significantly reduced if you choose a product with minimal fat content.

If you cook the drink in a turkey, then in 200 ml of coffee with milk without sugar – 15 kcal.

Coffee with cream is very tasty, but also very caloric. Liquid 10% cream contains 120 kcal per 100 grams. If you add only 10 ml per cup, the energy value will increase by 12 kcal.

The energy value of instant coffee with milk (3.5%) averages 20 kilocalories per serving of 200 ml.

With sugar and milk

Coffee with milk and various coffee-milk cocktails, supplemented with sugar or sweet toppings, should be perceived not as drinks, but as a treat. A sweet cappuccino or latte with a cake is a luxury for those who watch their weight.

For example, a sweetened cappuccino, two thirds milk, contains 150 kcal per 200 ml cup.

The caloric value of coffee with milk (20 ml) and sugar (1 teaspoon) is about 30 kcal.

Instant coffee with milk and sugar contains about 50 kilocalories.

The “laziest” way to make it is a 3-in-1 drink. The sachet contains dried vegetable cream, instant coffee, sugar and various additives. One dose, which is recommended to dissolve in 200 ml of water, contains about 70 kcal.
