Grain coffee retains its full flavor and aroma better than ground coffee, so experts recommend buying beans to grind them yourself at home just before brewing. But what if you are on a hike or in the country or the coffee grinder is out of order, and you can’t live without a cup of your favorite drink? There are several ways to grind coffee at home without a grinder, but it will take more time and effort.
Other kitchen appliances
The modern kitchen is equipped with several devices that can replace the coffee grinder, if necessary. By design and principle of operation, they are slightly different from the knife grinder.
You can grind coffee beans in a blender, because the device with immersion blades usually has enough power to grind solid products. But a few rules of operation still need to be remembered, so as not to break the right technique.
- Pour a small amount of coffee, just to hide the knives. In this case, the grind will be more even. If you need to grind more than two servings, you will have to work in several steps.
- Metal blades get so hot from friction that they can burn the coffee. Therefore, you should turn it on for only a couple of seconds, repeatedly pressing the button.
- If the blender makes unaccustomed sounds, it is better not to use it.
The size of the grind will depend on the operating time. But it is not necessary to achieve a fine fraction: a burnt smell may appear.
The food processor
The fastest way to grind coffee without a coffee grinder at home is with a food processor. If the device easily grinds nuts, it will also cope with coffee beans. Comes in handy if you need to grind a lot of coffee: a handful it just does not grab. Like a blender, the blender should be started several times for a few seconds. This will save the technique from breakage, and coffee – from overcooking.
The grind will turn out uneven, but you can use a sieve to sift through the results. What passes through the sieve can be used in the brewer. Coarse particles will remain, which will brew well in a French press.
Any containers after contact with aromatic coffee powder should be washed immediately, so that the smell is not absorbed.
Despite the name, the device is used to grind a variety of products. As a substitute for a coffee grinder, a meat grinder is also perfect, you can grind coffee beans in it without any problems. The finer the holes in the grinder, the finer the coffee beans will be. However, even the finest grinder will not give the grind you need for brewing in a cup. A second pass through can grind the product to the consistency needed for a turkey.
Pour the beans into the electric grinder a little at a time, listening to the noise of the motor. If an unusual humming sound appears, turn off the device. Manual device is more reliable, but to qualitatively grind coffee, you will have to work hard.
Before using the grinder should be rinsed with boiling water and dried to get rid of onion or other persistent odor.

The rolling pin
A rolling pin can help you quickly grind grains into large pieces, but only if you only need to brew a couple of cups. It will not be possible to grind more than 50 grams in one go.
Put the grains in a plastic bag, let the air out of it and tie it up. Grind the grains, pressing the rolling pin a little harder than when rolling out the dough. After about 5 minutes of intensive work the result will be quite satisfactory.
If the rolling pin is made of soft wood, it may leave dents. Your favorite utensil is better not to risk – you can replace it with an ordinary glass bottle.
Kneading in a mortar is the very first way to grind hard grains. If you have patience, you can achieve a fairly fine grind, quite suitable for a mortar. Pour no more than two handfuls of coffee into the mortar to prevent beans from jumping out on the table. A heavy metal pestle, combined with a mortar of the right shape, gives a quick result.
However, this method has a great disadvantage. The mortar and pestle are usually used to grind spices, and their smell will eventually be absorbed into the material. Most spices will not spoil the bouquet of the drink, but the coffee trace will remain in the micro pores of the mortar.
In an extreme case, the coffee grinder can be replaced by a non-cooking tool – a hammer. Put the coffee in a bag, and cover the top with a towel, so that the sharp blows do not tear the polyethylene. You will get not grind, but break the coffee into large pieces, but for the French-press such a fraction will be good.
It is better not to work on the kitchen table, but on a board that you do not have to worry about damaging with dents.
A more convenient option is a hammer for making chops or a wooden mallet (mallet). They have a larger working surface area, and the process will go faster.
