What to do with coffee cake

Coffee is one of our most popular drinks. It helps cheer you up in the morning, but it’s not the only way to use it. Not everyone knows, but you can use coffee cake after the coffee machine as a fertilizer and for household needs.

Composition and instructions for use

Baked coffee contains nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and copper. These trace elements are good for plants. For example, the amount of nitrogen in the cake is the same as in the decomposed weeds. Plants need this element during the growing season. The content of phosphorus is sufficient to ensure the full development of crops, improve flowering and fruit setting, root formation.

This composition makes it possible to use waste coffee as a fertilizer for the vegetable garden. It is most useful on soils with a heavy texture – clayey, loamy soils. On sandstones, coffee grounds reduce acidity, and therefore improve the fertile layer.

Spirited coffee is excellent as a fertilizer for a variety of garden and indoor plants, especially:

  • berries;
  • carrots;
  • potatoes;
  • cabbage;
  • sugar beets;
  • soybeans;
  • roses;
  • ferns;
  • ornamental grasses;
  • azalea;
  • hydrangea.

You should not use the grounds to feed cacti or sprouts. You also don’t want to allow too much caffeine in the soil: It blocks the regrowth of new roots and the plants slowly die.

Regardless of the option of use, it is important to prepare the cake properly for further use. The residue left after brewing the drink should be collected and thoroughly dried, otherwise mold may form. Any container will do for storage, as long as it is breathable.

Ways to fertilize plants

There are several ways to use coffee grounds as a fertilizer:

  • making mulch (bedding);
  • adding to compost;
  • fertilizing soil;
  • watering (diluted with water);
  • plant nutrition.

If coffee grounds are used for compost, then the preparation should begin in the fall, so that it is ready for the spring. In other cases, the cake begins to be used at the beginning of the gardening season. Unlike mineral fertilizers – it is an organic means. It does not contain nitrates and nitrites, which then enter the plant food.

Using coffee grounds for pest control

You can use coffee grounds from the coffee machine to deter insects. Coffee contains poisons that kill slugs. To get rid of these pests, plants are sprayed with an infusion of cake (pour water and soak for 3-4 hours). If there are a lot of slugs, treatment should be carried out once a week.

Coffee grounds are intestinal poison for ants. It is sufficient to fill ant hills with dried coffee grounds.

To frighten wasps away from grapes will help install tin containers with coffee grounds and saltpeter in a ratio of 20:1. The resulting composition is set on fire and used for fumigation once every 2 weeks.

The use in indoor flower gardening

Although you can find many such tips on the Internet, watering flowers in pots with fresh coffee grounds is a bad idea. There is a high chance of mold growth.

However, using coffee machine waste does benefit houseplants. Options on how they can be used:

  1. Apply to the bottom of vases to create a drainage layer.
  2. To make fertilizers – to sprinkle coffee grounds on the soil and sprouts.
  3. Carry out a rich feeding shortly before flowering. However, start preparing it in advance: grind some straw and dry leaves, mix with coffee grounds in equal proportions, put it in a container, cover with a layer of soil, making 3-4 holes, and leave it to ferment for a month.

Some people add spun coffee to the soil for houseplants. It should not be more than 10% of the volume of the soil.

Do you need any other fertiliser?

Despite the abundance of micronutrients, the use of unground coffee as a fertilizer in the country should be supplemented by other fertilizers. Cake, for example, does not contain enough nitrogen, the plants need. Therefore, you should additionally use nitrogen fertilizers, for example, nettle infusion. In addition, there is a risk of “overdosing” the soil with caffeine.

When preparing compost, the total proportion of cake in it should not exceed 20%. When mulching, coffee alone should not be used. It is lighter than dry peat, even scattering it is not easy with the slightest wind. Therefore the product should be mixed, for example, with sawdust, dry bark or covered with a layer of earth.

Regular use of coffee for mulching will compact the soil, resulting in poor air permeability. For this reason, it is recommended to dilute it with a coarser fertilizer.

Drinking coffee is extremely useful in the home. There are many uses for it:

  1. An odor absorber in the refrigerator – just leave an open container of coffee grounds in it.
  2. Cleaner – Use coffee grounds to remove dried-on food residue in the kitchen. It’s abrasive, but less harsh than baking soda, so it won’t scratch the surface.
  3. Natural dye – dip white paper in coffee grounds diluted with water and you get “antique parchment,” which is great as packaging for a gift or needlework.
  4. Scrub – it can also be done with coffee grounds. It is enough to slightly dilute the baked coffee with water and add a little oil.

Coffee cake is a valuable product, suitable for fertilizer, garden pest control, household and cosmetic purposes. So do not rush to throw away the coffee grounds.
