Sometimes you want to save a few precious minutes when you’re going to work in the morning. Is it possible to make coffee in the evening so you can reheat it quickly in the microwave? Or make filter coffee in a drip coffee maker every other day? What’s worse than a fresh beverage than coffee brewed yesterday?
Allowable shelf life.
How pathetic to pour out a cup of cold coffee that you didn’t have time to drink immediately. The temptation to reanimate it is great – to bring it to the boil again. If no more than 5 hours have passed since it was brewed, there is nothing dangerous in this. Keep in mind that a sweet drink spoils faster.
If cooled espresso or Turkish coffee without milk and sugar immediately put in the refrigerator, it can be reheated and after 24 hours. Longer storage is not recommended.
Warmed in the microwave or on the stove yesterday’s black coffee contains the same amount of caffeine as fresh, so the invigorating effect is manifested in full. But it will not be possible to enjoy your favorite flavor.
What will change?
Brewed coffee the next day and even after a couple of hours will not contain the essential oils that give the drink its divine taste and aroma. Fats in any product, including coffee beans, quickly oxidize. The cup will contain a liquid that faintly resembles real coffee. You don’t have to be a gourmet or a professional barista to taste the difference between yesterday’s and fresh coffee.
There will not remain in the cup and useful substances, and because the beans contain vitamins PP, B1, B2, calcium, potassium and magnesium.
What about coffee with milk?
Any coffee and milk cocktails (cappuccino, latte, macchiato and others) and regular coffee with milk should be drunk freshly prepared. The higher the temperature in the room, the faster the drink will become sour.
Not only is the drink unpalatable, but it is also dangerous. After just a couple of hours at room temperature, harmful bacteria will begin to develop in the cup. Milk and cream, including dry additives and vegetable substitutes, create favorable conditions for the rapid growth of microorganisms.
And it looks very unappetizing: the fallen milk foam will leave streaks on the walls of the cup and a film on the surface of the liquid.
What about drinking cold coffee?
Don’t confuse a chilled beverage with an initially cold one. Cold brew (cold brew coffee), which is gaining popularity, is made within 12 to 24 hours by pouring cold water over the ground beans. But it can be kept in the fridge for several days. In this case, the useful properties, taste and smell do not disappear. This variation can be prepared several times a day and can be drunk as yesterday’s coffee or the day before that.
Coffee in a thermos or a heated coffee maker
Is yesterday’s coffee bad if it is warm enough because it was in a thermos? It’s not just while it’s cooling that the flavor and aroma are lost. Even when hot, coffee can become unpalatable. A time-tested thermos or a coffee maker with a warming function will keep the beverage at a high temperature, but it can’t preserve the full bouquet.
It’s acceptable to keep coffee in a thermos for 2 hours. Then the aroma will weaken and excessive bitterness will appear, because the coffee bean grains are in hot water and continue to brew. After 5 hours in a warm environment bacteria will begin to appear, so it is better to pour out the rest.
A drip coffee maker with a large capacity is good for office use. At home, it does not make sense to cook a full bowl: most of it will have to be poured after 5 hours of brewing.
It does not matter what kind of coffee maker the drink was made in and what kind was used. No gadgets and tricks will help to preserve all the qualities of coffee throughout the day. When it’s cold, pour it out, no matter how sorry you are. You want to cheer up, and the taste is not important – you can drink a cold drink, but if it has been standing for no more than 5 hours.
