Black coffee contains almost no calories and in addition promotes the breakdown of fat, so it is effective for weight loss. But not everyone likes such a variant of preparation. Fans of sweet milk lattes should keep in mind the high calorie content of dessert coffee.
What makes a drink high in calories
In addition to coffee beans, lattes necessarily include milk and sugar. Sweet flavored syrups make the taste range more diverse. Sometimes chocolate and cinnamon are added in small quantities, which also have a few calories. The result is a diet espresso-based coffee smoothie with a calorie count that matches a full-bodied dessert.
The energy value is made up of the nutritional content of the components: espresso, the dairy component, sugar and other sweeteners. The serving size also matters.
Type of milk
Milk is the main ingredient in a milkshake, accounting on average for over 50% of the nutritional value. It has a large variation in calories: skimmed milk contains half as many calories as whole milk. The nutritional value of milk coffee is greatly influenced by the fat content of the chosen product, while the caloric value of unsweetened lattes depends entirely on it.
Usually cow’s milk with a fat content of 2.5% is used. It is well frothy, tastes good, and is moderately nutritious. Vegetarians add coffee-based drinks and animal milk equivalents (soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk). But plant-based products add their own touch of flavor, so not everyone likes them.
A skimmed product does not whip well, so a smoothie based on it will not be gentle and pleasant in consistency.
|Type of milk||Calories per 100g|
|Pasteurized 2.5% (most common)||52|
|Vegetable (soy) 1.8%||54|
The volume of latte can vary, but the proportion of coffee and milk is mostly the same – 1:3. One part espresso (30 ml) takes 3 parts (90 ml) of milk.

Knowing the caloric value of 100 grams of milk and its amount in a serving, it is easy to count how many “dairy” calories are in a cup. You need to divide the energy value of 100 g of the product by 100 and multiply by the number of grams (milliliters) used for cooking.
For example, to determine the caloric value of an “average” cup of cocktail with 300 ml of milk and 2.5% fat, we conduct the following calculations: 52/100*225 = 177. These are only “dairy” kilocalories. The energy value of espresso can not be taken into account: there are only 2 calories per 100 grams. So, there are 117 calories in 300 ml of latte without sugar. The caloric value in 100g is calculated in reverse. 117/300*100 = 39 kcal.
Sweeteners increase the nutritional value of a coffee smoothie by using sugar and syrup. One teaspoon holds 5 g of granulated sugar, which is 20 kcal. The energy value of the syrup may vary slightly from one manufacturer to another, but on average it is also about 20 kcal per 5 grams. Therefore, a spoonful of sugar + a spoonful of syrup adds 40 kcal. Usually for a cup of drink 240 ml (100 kcal), this is enough. 100+40 = 140 kcal per serving. Let’s calculate the caloric value of a latte with syrup 140/250 (volume)*100=56 kcal/100g.

There is no one universally accepted volume of the drink, so coffee shops make it in different ways. Cups come in 120 to 450 ml. Accordingly, and the number of consumed calories can vary by 3.5 times.
Which type of latte is preferable?
The popular cocktail is often prepared in chain cafes and restaurants, and the numbers will vary from place to place.
|Coffee shop||Serving, ml||Nutritional value per serving / kcal per 100 g|
|Starbucks||480||190 / 40|
|McDonalds||480||210 / 44|
|Coffee House||250||111 / 44|
|Coffee Bean||480||260 / 54|
|Coffeemania||450||218 / 49|
|Shokoladnitsa||400||220 / 55|
It is a popular drink from vending machines. Its distinctive feature is small cups (200 ml). The shake has 120 ml of milk in 180 ml. In vending machines, a product with a fat content of 2.5% is used. Therefore, the caloric value of a latte without sugar is 52/100*120=62 kcal. When sugar is added, the energy value increases significantly: in one five gram stick – 20 kilocalories. Coffee with a double dose of sweetness contains 102 kilocalories.

The energy value of a drink from a vending machine may differ from the stated value if other ingredients were used.
Manufacturers of coffee in bags also try to satisfy the demands of their consumers and make blends for quick brewing. The stix already contains instant coffee, milk powder, sweeteners and flavorings. The packaging indicates the energy value of the semi-finished product.
Typically, a serving of latte is 50-70 kilocalories. It doesn’t matter if you dilute the contents of the sachet in 180 ml of water or 320 ml – the caloric content will not change, only the concentration of ingredients and, therefore, the richness of the drink will be different. It is better to do with less water, so that you don’t want to supplement the weak taste with sweetness or milk.
How to reduce the damage to the figure
It is possible to correct the caloric content of coffee latte per 100 grams if you prepare it yourself. Lovers of the coffee-milk smoothie can use one of the techniques to reduce the energy value of the drink:
- use dietary dairy products;
- avoid syrups;
- add less sugar.
Changing the proportions will result in a change in taste. If you don’t want to make your favorite drink less caloric, it’s better to limit yourself to a small cup.
