Along with wine and beer, coffee is the favorite drink of Vienna’s natives. They owe this love to an Ottoman ambassador who visited the Austrian capital. In addition to other products never seen in these parts, it was he who brought coffee beans to Vienna. Vienna was so addicted to this divine beverage that some particularly angry citizens even complained to the municipality, “Some citizens are using too much wood for coffee! The triumphant, centuriesold history of Vienna’s coffeehouses can be traced back to 1683, when retreating Turks left behind a large convoy with sacks of coffee beans. The city rewarded one of the heroes of that battle with a house, which was to become Vienna’s first coffee house. Numerous others followed, including the coffee house of Julius Meinl, which opened its doors in 1862.

Speaking about the Viennese coffee houses, it is worth noting that already in XVIII century they had everything that today is called “the best coffee traditions”. For example, the Julius Meinl coffee house was for many citizens the main place of rest and pastime. Here important matters were discussed, problems were solved, acquaintances were made and the most profitable deals were struck.

Vienna’s coffeehouse was mainly frequented by men, who came here several times a day: in the morning or afternoon, the regulars spent their time reading the papers and in the evening, they played games or argued about current affairs.

But that was not the most important thing – naturally, they all went to Meinl’s for “coffee. The coffee here was breathtaking, excellent, and the customers could choose a drink to their liking from 20 different sorts. With just one cup of coffee, the Viennese could sit in the coffee house all day.


So how did Meinl differentiate himself from the hundreds of other Viennese coffeehouse owners? He loved what he did and knew his business should be a family enterprise. When he opened his coffee shop, Meinl was the first to roast the beans before selling them. It was a special display of concern for the busy Viennese, who had previously had to spend
a lot of time every day.

The owner himself strictly monitored the roasting process and ruthlessly punished negligent vendors if they violated his established order. Julius Meinl coffee was roasted to perfection and this had a positive impact on its taste and unique aroma. The Viennese developed a fondness for it and later passed on their love to the whole world.

Coffee for the HoReCa segment (catering and hospitality industry) is carefully processed in a factory in Austria. It is intended for those restaurateurs who would like to offer their guests premium quality, modern design and a truly unforgettable taste.
