Mocaccino – a chocolate and coffee delight

The sweet mochaccino with chocolate and creamy notes has a lot of fans around the world, and their number is growing every year. This dessert cocktail which tastes like cocoa is especially popular with the beautiful ladies. Mocha is even nicknamed “lady’s drink” because it was originally made for lovely young ladies.

History of the drink

The recipe for the cocktail was invented in the 1970s and 1980s in North America, from where it began its march to other continents. The baristas decided to make mochaccino for visitors who were not drinking espresso because of its strength.

Traditionally the mochino was garnished with whipped cream and the finishing touch was grated chocolate. Very soon the classic version underwent changes – syrup became one of the main ingredients. Mocaccino preserved the aroma and tartness of natural coffee in harmony with the soft milk flavor.

Because the espresso was made from the beans of the mocha arabica variety, it didn’t take long to figure out the name of the cocktail. Americans still call it by its old name, while Europeans prefer to put “mochaccino” on the menu in the Italian manner.

The usual composition of the drink also differs, with an increase in the volume of milk and the syrup being replaced by hot chocolate. The difference between mocha and mochaccino is only in the name – it is not typical for Europeans to use an abbreviated version.

Drink formula

The basis of the cocktail is a classic espresso, which is specified in most mochaccino coffee recipes. Coffee shops add syrup, which gives the cocktail its characteristic taste, but baristas often experiment with hot chocolate as well.

The preparation methods are so varied that there are recipes with toppings, cinnamon, cocoa, and cream. Baristas name 3 classic ingredients:

  • ¼ hot chocolate;
  • ¼ espresso;
  • ½ chilled milk.

Before serving, the dessert is decorated with a foam of whipped cream. The composition is still confusing because few people know the difference between a cappuccino and a mochaccino. The first drink is based on the classic espresso with milk foam and milk, the recipe for the second is based on a chocolate component.

Quality requirements for mocha are not too high, so you can use a traditional espresso from the coffee machine or coffee brewed in a turkey. It is better to use 100% Arabica or a high quality blend of Robusta. Cocoa is added to mochaccino coffee to enhance the chocolate flavor.

Dietitians do not recommend abusing the dessert cocktail. 100 ml of coffee contain up to 300 kilocalories – the final figures depend on the amount of additives used, the type of chocolate and the fat content of the cream. You can reduce the energy value to 170-200 kcal. To reduce calories, you will have to give up decorations and tasty additives, giving preference to dark chocolate and nonfat components.

Mocaccino is usually served in cocktail glasses or tall glasses, always with a spoon. Unsweetened cookies or light marshmallows are suggested as treats. Baristas have come up with recipes for making both warm and cold mochas. Because of its high caloric content, dessert coffee is usually drunk before dinner.

Mochaccino delicately affects the heart and the nervous system, despite the caffeine content of up to 70 mg. The stimulating effect of the drink is smoothed by the addition of milk. The cost per serving varies from 140 to 370 rubles and depends on the composition.
