Salty coffee: why you should try it

An unusual for Europeans combination of coffee and salt is traditional and favorite in Asia and Africa. In the past, when this spice was expensive, only the richest people could drink it.

Why salt drinks

There are several reasons why different peoples prefer salty drinks to sweet ones. This is mainly due to the geographic, climatic and environmental conditions.

In hot countries with a shortage of clean drinking water, it is important to protect the body from fluid loss. Sodium chloride, a source of electrolytes, copes with this task perfectly. The Asian recipe was picked up by mariners. The coffee-salt drink helped fight motion sickness, and they called it “sea coffee.”


Drinking large amounts of caffeine can cause mineral deficiencies. three to four cups of strong espresso a day washes out up to 1,200 mg of sodium, while the daily allowance is 1,500 mg. Thus, to compensate for the lack of this substance, it is necessary to introduce more salty foods into the diet. The benefit of coffee with salt is to make up for the lack of sodium in the cells, especially if you drink more than 4 cups a day.


The harms of salted coffee override its health benefits if one has a medical condition:

Classic recipe

To make it, you will need:

  • 2 tsp. ground coffee;
  • 150 ml of cold water;
  • salt by the tip of a knife.

In a hot pot pour the ingredients, heat slightly. Pour cold water and put on low heat. bring 2-3 times until foam appears. Pour the ready drink into the heated cups, add 1 tsp. cold water, so that the sediment sinks to the bottom faster. Serve hot with dried fruit and oriental sweets.


To prepare, you will need:

  • 3-4 tsp. ground coffee;
  • 200 ml of cold water;
  • 0.5 tsp. salt.

Make a strong espresso in the usual way. Pour into two cups: 150 ml into one cup and the rest into the other. Whisk a small portion of the drink with 0.5 tsp. of seasoning using a steamer or blender. Serve both cups together: the guest will add the concentrate to taste. Coffee with salt is called “buna ch’ou” in Ethiopia.

  • 20 ml cream;
  • 1 tsp. sugar;
  • a pinch of salt;
  • pinch of vanilla

  • 150 ml of water;
